Resumen

Over the last decade social scientists have moved from a static to a more dynamic view of  social networks. Instead of viewing a network as a static set of “pipes” through which ideas, information, tastes and models of behavior “flow,” networks, especially the social ties connecting people,  are seen as variably fragile constructions which are formed, and can evolve and dissolve.  While mapping out the structure of a network at any one point in time by identifying the connections among people is an important first step, our theoretical understanding of networks will only be advanced when we develop and assess generative models of networks.  Three processes are critical:  tie formation, tie development (evolution) and tie decay.  In this talk I discuss theoretical models for each of these processes and research findings from the NetSense and NetHealth studies.  The talk concludes by discussing the implications dynamic models of networks have for understanding how important interpersonal influence is, and when and how behaviors, tastes and attitudes spread through social networks.
